Being a corporate travel manager can be a high-pressure job, especially when handling demanding executives who travel often. Planning business trips of high importance can make you feel like you've got the weight of the world on your shoulders. While many corporate travel managers are master ninjas who can handle their duties with ease, the job still produces stress. If you’re a veteran corporate travel manager, you know that anything can happen on each and every trip. So what can you do to handle stress?

Identifying your stress

Some people accept stress as an everyday occurrence, but how does one know if they are stressed? Your body will react to an excess amount of stress many ways.

  • Headaches
  • Sleeping problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Tendency to sweat
  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Sexual difficulties
  • Craving for food

Because stress can attack your body and cause some of the above named symptoms, you may not, at first, recognize that stress is causing the symptoms. Stress can make you feel like crying, or being snappy or aggressive or avoiding difficult situations. Recognizing that stress is your problem, how do you relieve the stress so that you can work?

Best ways to relieve stress

First you must be honest with yourself and accept that there are things that are completely out of your control. When a stressful issue arises, take a deep breath and pull yourself away from the problem and look at it from the end result. Taking a 15-minute time away from area, a brief walk outside or grab a quick cup of coffee or tea and just relax. If these don’t calm you down, find your approach stretch, exercise or listen to your favorite song.

The use of meditation will also help keep you calm when a stressful situation occurs. Sitting right at your desk, you just close your eyes and take deep breaths and think of whatever calms you, your spouse, your children or smelling the roses. The whole idea is to calm down so that you can think reasonably.

Yoga is another way to relax and you just need to close your door to your office, and do a short routine to relax your body and mind. Just as stress can build, relaxing can slow it down to a rate that you can still function and work on a reasonable solution.

Eating right, getting plenty of sleep and exercising also helps to relieve stress. As a corporate travel manager, you need to stay positive throughout the whole ordeal, and this will help in achieving a positive outcome. Focus on getting your traveler to his or her destination is the main objective.

Stress cannot be avoided when you are in a stressful job, but learning how to control and manage the stress is something we call can do. The better we do that, the better we will feel about ourselves, the job and those around us. Remember, when you are stressed, it not only affects you, but those around you as well.
