Boosting Perseverance at Work and Home
For some people, just getting through the day is a full time job. They may have things going on in their personal or professional lives that make it difficult to stay the course and continue working towards their goal in life. In some cases, they may have an issue with staying motivated without someone pushing them or some kind of incentive. Unfortunately, inspiring ourselves to “keep on keeping on” and maintaining that motivation in hard times can be one of the most difficult things we do as adults. There’s no shame in admitting we’re having a difficult time staying on track. Everyone goes through it, and the stronger ones are those that come out on the other side, having been made better by the adversity they overcame to get there.
If you’re having a hard time maintaining your perseverance or you need some help just getting through the day, we’ve put together a few tips that will hopefully help.
Admit You Need Help
There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it. Some people see needing help in times of need as a sign of weakness. Rather, when you ask for help, you’re letting people know that you’re strong enough to recognize that you can’t go through it alone. Whether you’re stuck on a project at work and need help finishing it or you’re dealing with a death in the family at home, there is always someone out there that you can go to for help. Support from your peers, colleagues, and family is the best way to make it through hard times, professionally and personally.
Don’t Overthink It
If there comes a time that you have a big decision ahead of you, the worst thing you can do is overthink it. While we don’t expect you to just jump straight into a bad decision, there will be times when actions before thought are required. Additionally, you may end up talking yourself out of a good thing if you think too much.
When people get into a bad situation, whether at work or at home, they tend to think the worst of things. It’s difficult to see the silver lining, but you can’t crowd your mind with negative thoughts all the time. Although it is easier said than done, you may just have to wipe those thoughts out of your mind and just move on.
Set a Goal
This goal could be a professional goal or a personal goal. Maybe you’re currently in an entry level position in the company of your dreams, but you have higher aspirations. It’s possible that you’ve been overlooked for promotions recently and feel as though you’ll always be stuck in the position that you’re in. Set a goal to snag that next promotion and figure out what it will take to get it. Consider the actions and work done by those that were promoted before you and see if it can be applied to your own situation. Once you meet that goal, don’t become complacent; instead, set another goal. When you keep setting goals, the sky is the limit.
Don’t Give Up
This is probably the most obvious advice we could give you in regards to persevering through difficult times. You can’t lie down and give up when times get hard. Remember earlier how we said that asking for help is a sign of weakness? No, giving up is a sign of weakness. Show everyone that you’ve got what it takes to make it through anything by not giving up when dark clouds come around. If you stick it out and make it through this hard time, you’ll prove it to yourself that you can do it and the next time will be that much easier. Once you make it out alive, you’ll become your own source of inspiration, and there is no better inspiration than yourself.
Don’t let tough times get you down. Don’t let a bump in the road keep you from the goals you’ve set for your life. Perseverance and motivation don’t come easily or naturally for anyone. We all have to fight for what we want, and if you follow these tips, hopefully you can find that inner fire you need to push you through. Keep on keeping on, and never give up. It will get easier!
